Teeth Cleaning

Preserving Your Overall Dental Health

What does a dental hygienist do?

Dental hygiene is the practise of having your teeth cleaned by a dentist. Following an assessment, our dental hygienist at Approach Dentistry performs the procedure as part of your regular dental visits. A thorough cleaning of your teeth at regular intervals, also known as polishing or scaling the teeth, is an important part of preserving your overall dental health. Our dentists will also help you learn the best brushing and flossing practises for removing plaque, which is the main cause of gum disease. This is an important part of our preventative strategy.

Why do I need regular dental hygiene?

Gum disease is the most common dental problem, yet it is also one of the easiest to prevent. All that is required to avoid suffering from the two types of gum disease is good dental hygiene and regular appointments to your dentist and dental hygienist.

Gum disease is caused by plaque, a coating of bacteria that builds continuously on the gum and tooth surfaces. Plaque does not actively harm your gums or teeth, but it does build up over time and cause inflammation, which can lead to bleeding and infected small open wounds in your gums.

Plaque, if not treated or removed through regular brushing and flossing, causes gum disease, which can result in tooth and bone loss as well as painful abscesses. Tenderness and minor bleeding when brushing your teeth may be the first signs of gum disease. If this occurs, please visit our dental hygienist; you will most likely simply only a simple cleaning to get back on track.

What happens during a dental hygiene check-up?

The amount of bacteria (plaque and tartar) in our mouth must be reduced as part of the treatment. Effective daily oral hygiene at home (brushing with a clean brush, flossing, and utilising interdental brushes) is attainable, however brushing and flossing alone will not eradicate all microorganisms. Only a dentist or hygienist can remove this hard-to-reach plaque, which hardens into tartar.
